About the project

As part of their sponsorship of the 2024 Cardiff Half Marathon, Principality Building Society launched a competition offering one lucky winner £24,207 — 10% of the average UK house price at the time. The campaign ran across social media alongside their sponsorship announcement, with paid ads building anticipation ahead of the event. When the winner was chosen, Principality wanted a motion graphic that would share the story in an engaging, brand-consistent way. The video needed to balance clean, friendly visuals with an approachable tone, while making use of both illustrated assets and PR photography from the winner’s announcement.

Project Details

The challenge for this project was working within Principality’s well-established brand guidelines. As the leading building society in Wales, their identity is instantly recognisable, so the animation had to feel consistent with their existing look and tone.

To achieve this, I used Principality’s brand font and illustration style, which focuses on soft, approachable shapes paired with warm, inviting details. Their core colour palette guided every frame, ensuring legibility and harmony across text, illustrations, and photography. I also added subtle 3D shadows to enhance depth without straying from the clean, friendly style.

The narrative focused on telling the winner’s story in a way that felt clear and celebratory. I incorporated photographs from the PR shoot alongside illustrated elements, using painterly-style transitions to move smoothly between frames. This consistent motion language helped the piece feel calm, easy to follow, and approachable to a wide audience.

The Outcome

The final video successfully delivered Principality’s brief: a brand-consistent, engaging announcement that celebrated the winner while reinforcing their sponsorship of the Cardiff Half Marathon. The motion graphic combined text, illustration, and photography in a way that felt approachable and on-brand, appealing to a wide audience while showcasing Principality’s identity with clarity and consistency.
